Automotive Electronics Supplier Expands Its AI Technology Testing into US

Minneapolis, MN – February 02, 2021 – Compal Electronics, one of Taiwan's largest original design manufacturers, through its business unit Automotive Electronics Products (AEP) announced that it became a sponsor of VSI’s research vehicle. The sponsorship allows AEP to further develop its proprietary AI technology utilizing a visible camera and thermal imaging. Not only can AEP’s AI detect an object’s class but also its action for prediction of traffic accidents that may happen before collision. AEP seeks to demonstrate its AI technology to the industry by testing to various NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) safety standards.

VSI Labs is a Minneapolis, MN-based company providing technical and applied research on the hardware, software, and connectivity systems necessary to support advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving (AD) systems.

The  VSI  Labs demonstration vehicle is equipped with sponsored components from best-in-class companies supporting ADAS and AD development. The components are integrated into the vehicle by VSI’s developers to test and demonstrate the capabilities enabled by their technology. Current components include domain compute, LiDAR, radar, positioning, High-Definition maps, among other sensors and technologies. “VSI is thrilled to have Compal join our sponsorship program,” said Phil Magney, Founder & President of VSI Labs. “We’re looking forward to supporting the testing and development of Compal’s AI technology.”

AEP is a Tier 2 supplier, IATF 16949 and ISO 26262(ASIL D) certified, of infotainment and telematics system electronics with subsidiary facilities in the United States and Mexico in addition to Taiwan, Vietnam and China servicing OEMs including BMW, Audi/VW, General Motors, Toyota, Mercedes Benz, FCA, Volvo, Man/Scania, Suzuki, Hyundai and Nissan. It plans to further expand its product portfolio into ADS primarily with related electronics assembly, electronic control units (ECUs) and domain controls unit (DCUs).
